Give this reference to Nawal. It will lead you to me.
Marcello Espada
PS You ski, of course? I hope you enjoy the Firngleiters!
Above the short message were written two strange words in capitals - Noble Lie.
Nawal had already looked at the message and was putting the letters into a palm-sized SatNav device he had taken from his bag. It seemed to mean something to him.
It could still be a trap. How did Stone know this was from Espada? He still had no idea where to meet him. Nawal could be part of an elaborate trap. Stone looked again at the backpack lying on the ice at Nawalâs feet. It looked empty, apart from the shape of something fairly long which didnât quite fit in there.
A rifle? Stone made another grab for the backpack and managed to seize it this time. He backed away, his eyes on Nawal, and felt inside the bag, then dragged the contents out. No rifle, no weapon at all. They looked like short stubby skis, no more than sixty centimetres long. They were shorter than even the shortest skis he had ever seen, but wide - they were about fifteen centimetres wide. There were some strapping mechanisms on the top.
Nawal came over and took two of the stubby skis and left the other pair for Stone. He was holding the SatNav device and beckoning Stone to go with him. Nawal turned and led on through the Ice Cave. Stone stood still on the mirrored ice of the high vaulted room.
Stone looked at the thin grey paper again and its message. It had to mean something. There were two enigmatic words at the top of the page.
